This 2017-2018 Season, the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s KinderKonzerts work to expand musical literacy in all students.

ABOUT KINDERKONZERTS:
Explore the different families of orchestral instruments while introducing children to live symphonic music through fun and interactive programs with PSO musicians. The concerts are 40-50 minutes in length and take place at various locations throughout the state and are performed more than 50 times per season in communities across Maine. (ages 4-8)

Woodwind KinderKonzerts: What is an Orchestra and What Does it Do?

The musicians of the Portland Symphony Orchestra are really good at what they do. But what exactly do they have to do to make it all look so easy? This show will feature 5 Woodwind musicians from the PSO as they share with students, all of the things that go in to making a great performance like focus, perseverance, practice, and above all, teamwork

String KinderKonzerts: Beethoven: Inventor, Rebel, Storyteller

It can be easy to think that classical music from great composers like Beethoven is too complex and difficult to understand, but this performance breaks down this legendary composers works in to tiny, easy-to-understand patterns and excerpts that show how simple, and how clever Beethoven’s music really was. Students will learn about some of the core concepts of music like rhythm, melody, and harmony in this highly interactive program

Brass KinderKonzerts: The Circus Ship

Get the know the instruments of the brass family as they tell the story of The Circus Ship, by Chris Van Dusen. Students will learn about how music from around the world has made its way to Maine just like all of the animals in Van Dusen’s story. This program will also show how each of the brass instruments plays a unique role in the group and important it is to work as a team.

Percussion KinderKonzerts: Musical Building Blocks: Metal, Skin and Wood in the Percussion Family

Percussionist are unique in that they can make music with just about any object you can think of. From brake drums off of old cars to delicate and sophisticated wooden Marimba, the percussion family of instruments covers the widest range of objects of any family. Students will learn about the many instruments of the percussion family.

  • AT THE CONCERT: You do not need tickets for the concert — your group will be identified by the group name that you provided. For performances at Merrill Auditorium, seats will be assigned by Portland City staff. All seating requests will be considered but not guaranteed, depending upon ADA-accessible seating needs and group sizes.
  • PAYMENT POLICY: Please note that the PSO has a strict 30-day payment policy for tickets. Payment must be received at least 30 days before the performance, otherwise the reserved tickets may be released to the public. If your group requires more time to process a payment, please contact the PSO immediately.
  • CANCELLATION POLICY: All changes or cancellations to a reservation must be made at least 30 days before the performance. Any changes or cancellations received less than 30 days before the performance will not be refunded.
  • CANCELLATION DUE TO WEATHER: In the event that a performance is cancelled due to inclement weather, attendees will be notified as quickly as possible and all tickets and ticket fees will be refunded. Should your school district declare a cancellation or late start that prohibits a group from attending a PSO Youth Concert, contact the PSO immediately. A refund for your order including ticket fees will be processed within 10 business days.
    Please note: The PSO typically only cancels performances when the host venue has cancelled or delayed school.
