PORTLAND, Maine (October 4, 2010) — The Portland Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announced today the appointment of Lisa Dixon as Executive Director. Dixon comes to the PSO from the Memphis Symphony Orchestra (MSO), where she has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2008.

“After an intensive search, and with a unanimous vote, we have found the perfect person to lead the PSO into our next phase of health and growth,” said PSO Board President Gordon Gayer. “Lisa’s recent experience in the community engagement sphere will serve the PSO particularly well during this transformative time. We look forward to drawing on Lisa’s leadership and knowledge as we continue to strengthen as an orchestra and as a community organization.”

“I feel very fortunate that the PSO has been able to bring Lisa Dixon on board,” said Music Director Robert Moody. “I have had the privilege of working with her at the Memphis Symphony, and I am a big fan of the work she has done during her time there.”

“Lisa Dixon’s background and innovative work in Memphis equip her with a fresh perspective to apply to her new role in Portland, ”said Jesse Rosen, President and CEO of League of American Orchestras. “We are delighted to welcome her to the ranks of talented former League Fellows who are at the helm of orchestras across the nation.”

Prior to becoming COO, Dixon was the MSO’s Director of Operations & Community Engagement. During her tenure in Memphis, Dixon helped reinvent the organization’s business model and organizational structure; developed a network of new community partnerships; collaborated on the creation of Opus One, an innovative musician-led concert series, and of Leading From Every Chair®, a nationally recognized leadership development program. She was selected from over 80 applicants to take part in the League of American Orchestras’ 2005-06 Orchestra Management Fellowship program, during which she worked with the symphony orchestras of Boston and Memphis, as well as the North Carolina Symphony and Aspen Music Festival. Dixon holds Bachelor of Music degrees from the Eastman School of Music (Rochester, NY) in clarinet performance and in music education, and is a post-graduate mentor with Eastman’s Arts Leadership Program.
